International Sermon Studies Association Conference: Sermons and Human Dignity

21-22 July 2023

The International Center for Law and Religion Studies partnered with the Oxford Centre for Methodism and Church History to hold the International Sermon Studies Association Conference. The theme was Sermons and Human Dignity. 2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the proclamation in Paris of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. That key document recognizes the inherent dignity of and the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family as the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world. This conference sought to explore how human dignity has been understood in sermonic texts and homiletic literature not only since the Second World War, which was the immediate impetus of the Declaration, but also how human dignity was conceived of, defined, and developed in homiletic literature from around the world well before the 20th century.
