William Gibson

Emeritus Professor, Oxford Brookes University

William Gibson is an emeritus professor at Oxford Brookes University and a member of the Theology Faculty of the University of Oxford.  He has held visiting fellowships at Yale University, Baylor University, and the Huntington Library. A fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, Professor Gibson has written widely on religion and the state between 1660 and 1900. He is the author or editor of more than 20 books on the period; his most recent publications are Samuel Wesley and the Crisis of Tory Piety, 1685–1720 (Oxford University Press, 2021) and Halifax: The Character of a Trimmer and Other Writings (Oxford World’s Classics, 2025). Professor Gibson is currently completing a study of James II and Wales.
