Strasbourg Consortium for Freedom of Religion or Belief: 2008 Conference

The Strasbourg Consortium for Freedom of Religion or Belief hosts conferences to promote high-level discussion of current and pending issues of freedom of religion or belief (FORB) in the European Court of Human Rights. The first conference was held in July of 2005, in Strasbourg, France. The focus of that conference centered on the Leyla Şahin v. Turkey case (the headscarf case) then pending before the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights.

The 2008 Conference was held 20-22 July in Geneva, Switzerland, in connection with the Focus on FORB meetings. The discussion this year focused on the following issues and cases:

  1. The Right of Religious Congregations to Change Denominational Affiliation (Svyato-Mykhalivska Parafiya v. Ukraine) 
  2. Religious Employment Cases and the Right of Religious Organizations to Hire and Fire Employees 
  3. Religious Education Cases (including Urszula Grzelak, Czeslaw Grzelak and Mateusz Grzelak v. Poland) 
  4. Taxation Issues (including Association les Temoins de Jehovah v. France) 
  5. Other Pending Issues
