Odetinha: the first Brazilian saint from Rio de Janeiro

Randa Vieira

The Catholic Church in Rio de Janeiro has filed a request with the Archdiocesean Tribunal to initiate the sanctification process of Odetinha, the first ‘carioca’ saint. ‘Carioca’ is how Brazilians call a native of Rio de Janeiro. Odete Vidal de Oliveira was born in 1930 and died at age 9. Odetinha is believed to have cured a blind woman and saved another from postpartum hemorrhage.
