Juan Guillermo García Montúfar Sarmiento

Juan Guillermo García Montúfar Sarmiento heads the real estate department at Estudio De la Flor, García Montúfar, Arata & Asociados in Lima, Peru. He has served as principal external counsel to leading real estate investment entities in Peru and also to property formalization initiatives in Peru, El Salvador, Haiti, Mexico, Egypt, and Tanzania. Professor García Montúfar has advised the Ministry of Justice of Peru on mediation and reconciliation and has previously counseled the World Bank and the Institute for Liberty and Democracy on matters of administrative and civil law. He served as president of the commission appointed by the minister of justice to draft the Bill on Religious Freedom and to oversee its passage through Congress. Professor García Montúfar was also responsible for organizing Peru’s first international symposium on religious freedom—an event organized by the Ministry of Justice with sponsorship from the International Center for Law and Religion Studies at Brigham Young University. In addition to his legal practice, Professor García Montúfar has taught real estate law at the Universidad de Lima and Universidad San Martín de Porres.
