Ilvin Mugeta

Judge, High Court of Tanzania, Arusha Region

Ilvin Mugeta obtained his LLB from the University of Dar es Salaam in 2000 and his LLM from Mzumbe University in 2011, focusing on the efficacy of regulatory authorities in the public utilities of water and electricity. He is currently pursuing a PhD in probate and administration, tracing the development and application of the principles that inform court decisions in Tanzania and considering its multiethnic societies and their plural succession laws. Judge Mugeta joined the Judiciary of Tanzania in January 2002 as a resident magistrate. In 2004 he began performing both judicial and administrative functions at the district and regional court levels. In 2013 he worked to establish the Directorate of Judicial Services Inspection and Ethics. In 2015 he was appointed registrar of the High Court, and in 2018 he was appointed judge of the High Court. Since 2022 he has served as vice president of the Commonwealth Magistrates’ and Judges’ Association representing the east, central, and southern Africa Regions.
