Elvis fans attend memorial vespers in Amsterdam church

Amsterdam (ENInews)—While thousands of Elvis Presley fans were gathered on 16 August at his grave in Memphis, Tennesee to mark the 35th anniversary of the rock icon’s death, a smaller crowd of devotees attended a memorial event in an Amsterdam church that focused on his gospel legacy. The evening service of vespers invited churchgoers to light a candle in remembrance of Elvis or another beloved person. Pastor Fred Omvlee read out Psalm 23, which he said had been Elvis’ favorite Bible text. Omvlee, a navy chaplain from the Protestant Church in the Netherlands and a self-confessed Elvis aficionado, led the memorial event, which was illustrated with film footage. [409 words, ENI-12-0487]
