Brazil: Some 1,200 Christians killed in religiously biased hate crimes in the last year

According to a 2016 report by NGO Open Doors in Brazil gathering information from fifty countries, almost 1,200 Christians were killed between November 1, 2015 and October 31, 2016 in hate crimes motivated by religious bias. The number shows a significant decrease in religiously-biased hate crimes when compared to 7,100 victims in 2015, 4,433 in 2014, and 2,123 in 2013. Nigeria is the country with most victims followed by North Korea. The NGO believes that even though the numbers accurately show a significant decrease in religious persecution around the world, the report relies exclusively on data from reliable sources on reported and well documented crimes and, thus, does not include undocumented crimes or acts of violence which could double or even triple the number of victims.
