Conference in Jerusalem: Legal and Moral Challenges of Religious Resurgence – March 2015

Professor Cole Durham and Dean Brett Scharffs, Director and Associate Director of the International Center for Law and Religion Studies (ICLRS), participated in the conference “Legal and Moral Challenges of Religious Resurgence” held 22-23 March 2015 in Jerusalem, at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute. Co-sponsored by the Institute and the International Consortium for Law and Religion Studies (Milan) (ICLARS), the conference featured presentations from scholars from Israel, the United States, and the United Kingdom.  Participants were greeted and welcomed by Director of the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute, Gabriel Motzkin; by Professor Durham, and by Joseph David, Associate Faculty Member, University of Oxford and Professor of Law, Sapir Academic College, who joined again for Closing Reflections. José Casanova, Head of The Berkley Center’s Program on Globalization, Religion and the Secular and Professor of Sociology, Georgetown University, gave the Jeynote Address, “The Challenge of Religious and Secular Pluralism: Towards Post-confessional and Post-secularist States.”

Professor Durham participated in a Round Table discussion, “Religious and the Secular,” with Moshe Halbertal, Ahman Natour, and Ishak Englard. Professor Scharffs presented the paper, “Four Models of Public Discourse and their Implications for the Public Sphere.” Other presenters included Tahir Mahmood, Rabbi Naftali Rotherberg, Christoph Schmidt, Tomer Persico, Mutaz Qafisheh, Yaron Ezrahi, Suzanne L. Stone, Gila Stopler, Asher Maoz, Ruth Gavison, Peter Petkoff, Pasquale Annicchino, Yaacov Yadgar, Lene Salaymeh, Yuri Stoyanov, Shai Secunda, Shai Lavi, Michael Karayanni, and Uriel Simonsohn.
